CBC news + CFMS Conference

In April 2023, NHH had the opportunity to present our refugee initiative at a student conference in Quebec hosted by the Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS)..

We provided a presentation about the refugee crisis, inequities in newcomer health and the gaps that currently exist in Canadian healthcare.

We wanted to make sure that everyone in the audience understood the magnitude of the problem and how urgent it is for all of us to take action especially as future health care professionals.

We explained the founding principles of our work; that we can better empower newcomers to take control of their health by informing them about available resources and advocating on their behalf. We also highlighted some of the upcoming projects that we are planning to undertake, including fundraising events, awareness campaigns, and volunteer opportunities. We were thrilled to see that many students were inspired by our initiative and expressed interest in getting involved. Some shared their own experiences of working with refugees, while others asked for more information about how they could contribute.

Overall, we were delighted with how our presentation resonated with medical students from across Canada. It was humbling to see so many passionate students come together, show support for our initiative, and commit to improving newcomer health.

Presenting the NHH at this conference was an incredible experience. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to connect with so many like-minded individuals and share our ideas with them. It was a powerful reminder that, even in the face of immense challenge, there are people who are willing to make a difference.

We are also excited to share that we were recently featured on CBC news in June 2023, check out the article here!
